Big clues you might have missed early on in prodigal son season 1

In a shocking reversal of expectations, the first season of “The Prodigal Son” didn’t end with Malcolm killing anyone. Even as he points his gun at the evil businessman Endicott (Dermot Mulroney), with the killer telling him he will never be prosecuted, the profiler hesitates to pull the trigger. Instead, Malcolm’s older sister Ainsley (Halston Sage) stabs Endicott and cuts his throat, then apparently doesn’t remember what she did.

No one really saw it coming, but in an interview with ET Canada to promote Season 2, “The Prodigal Son” co-star Michael Sheen pointed out that a background detail in the pilot reported literally before the Ainsley change. When Sheen posed for family photos for flashbacks, young Malcolm and Ainsley were also present. “[The photos] made me laugh,” Sheen commented, “because I was so focused on little Malcolm, but little Ainsley did literally in the dark, you know, in the dark behind me. And that image has stayed with me to the end. “

Sheen went on to explain that Ainsley is a “small flower that grows in the dark…without anyone noticing”, following in the footsteps of his character Martin. It’s a neat little Easter egg that in hindsight points to the truth about Ainsley. As interviewer Carlos Bustamante points out, maybe the show’s title really shouldn’t be “The Prodigal Son,” but “The Prodigal Daughter.”
