Canadian tennis star Bianca Andreescu, who won the US Open in 2019, announced on Monday that she is taking a mental break from sports. Andreescu plans to sit out early next season, including the Australian Open in January.

Andreescu says she wants to “reset, recover and grow” after contracting COVID-19 in April 2021. The 21-year-old added that she was affected mentally and physically due to quarantine due to COVID-19.

“A lot of days, I don’t feel like myself, especially when I’m training and/or competing. I feel like I’m carrying the world on my shoulders,” Andreescu said. “I can’t separate myself from everything that’s going on off the pitch; I’m feeling the collective sadness and chaos around me and that has taken its toll on me.”

Back in 2019, Andreescu defeated Serena Williams in the US Open final and rose to 4th place in the WTA rankings. However, in October 2019, Andreescu tore a meniscus in his left knee and was forced to be away from court for more than a year.

Andreescu was back at the Australian Open 2021, but lost in the second round. In addition, the 21-year-old tennis player reached the fourth round of the US Open before falling to Maria Sakkari. She also lost in the opening round at both the French Open and Wimbledon.

“I want to give myself more time to reset, recover, and grow from this (sounds cliché) and continue to inspire by doing philanthropic work, giving, and striving for myself. because I know by doing this I will come back stronger than ever”, wrote Andreescu. “Therefore, I will not start my season in Australia this year, but will spend more time. to reflect, train and get ready for the upcoming 2022 tennis season.”
