Munich-based Beta Film continues to develop top series from Spain and has secured the international distribution rights for ‘Simple’, the new dramedy from Anna R. Costa, co-creator of ‘Arde Madrid’, Movistar Plus+’s most-watched series.
Costa’s directorial debut, Simple, premiered earlier this week in San Sebastian as the world premiere of Movistar Plus+.
Produced by Movistar Plus+ in collaboration with Destrucción y Salvación, “Simple” is about four young women in their 20s and 30s who have reached a milestone in their lives: sharing a home as truly independent adults. The series follows the housemates, all of whom are disabled, as they cope with the pressures of adulthood and the absurd norms imposed on them by society.
As Costa asked in a diversity Interview: “How on earth has society marginalized certain people just because of their gender, race, cognition, forced them into social isolation, challenged them and abused them just so they can reclaim their sense of belonging? Isn’t it easier for all people to be considered first-class beings, to develop according to their own abilities and desires?”
Inspired by the abstract novel “Lectura Fácil” by Cristina Morales, the series is co-directed by Laura Jou (“Cucut”). The five-episode strand stars award-winning Spanish actresses Natalia de Molina (“Life Is Easy With Your Eyes Closed”) and Anna Castillo (“The Olive Tree”), as well as Anna Marchessi (“Amar en Tiempos Revueltos”) and Coria Castillo.
Beta has also signed new sales deals with key European partners for its Spanish crime series.
The company recently sold “Rapa”, the most-watched program of Movistar Plus+ this year, to the Italian pubcaster RAI and the French pay-TV channel Polar+, part of the Canal+ group. Season 2 of Rapa is currently in production.
“Rapa”, like Hierro, also produced by Movistar Plus+ and Spain’s Portocabo, takes a well-known genre – here a rural crime thriller – and then tears up the rule book. Javier Cámara, star of Pedro Almodóvar’s Talk to Her, plays the argumentative literature teacher Tomás, who teams up with a civil servant to solve the murder of their hometown mayor and settle their differences.
“Rapa” will have its international premiere at Mipcom on Monday, October 17th.
Beta Film also sold the Canneseries contribution “El Inmortal – Gangs of Madrid” to the French pay-TV network OCS, to the streaming platform Streamz in Belgium and to the VOD platform Go3 in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
Starring multi-award winning Alex Garcia (Morocco, Riot Police) as the titular immortal, the eight-part series chronicles the extraordinary rise of Madrid’s infamous Los Miami drug cartel and its charismatic leader. The drama is produced by Movistar Plus+ and Telemundo Int’l Studios in association with DLO Producciones.
Meanwhile, season 3 of a beta film has picked up, the action crime series “La Unidad” has now been given the green light. The series transports the Spanish anti-terrorist force to the Taliban’s epicenter in Afghanistan and the tumultuous evacuation of Kabul. The series is produced by Movistar Plus+ and Buendía Estudios.
