Likewise, England all-rounder Ben Stokes shared a photo of himself with Root on Instagram with the caption: It’s been a great trip with you my friend. It was an honor that one of my best friends took us onto the field. You have given your all for English cricket and we all want to express our gratitude for your efforts and dedication.
The duels in Antigua and Barbados showed promise, but England were knocked down by 10 wickets in the final Test and lost 0-1 in Root’s 64th Test as captain, despite missing the crucial James Anderson and Stuart Broad combination, which inexplicably closed were left home. That number in itself is a milestone for most games as England captain and his 27 wins put him first in terms of wins overall, but the Test side have now undergone another leadership change.
As the England men’s Test captain, Root set the record for most games and wins. He has more wins than Michael Vaughan, Sir Alastair Cook and Sir Andrew Strauss combined. Following Cook’s retirement in 2017, Root was made captain. He coached the team to several notable strings of victories, including a 4-1 home win over India in 2018 and a 3-1 away win over South Africa in 2020.
