Everyone loves a big sword, but that’s especially true of the Monster Hunter series. Ask most people what comes to mind when they think of Monster Hunter and they’ll say the ridiculously oversized guns. The greatsword in Monster Hunter Rise fits the bill nicely, giving players the ability to wield an incredibly large sword like their favorite characters.

Playing with a greatsword is easier than other weapons like the Switch Axe, but it still needs the right build to really shine. Here are some of our favorite builds for this classic weapon.

Critical hit build

This build stacks multiple Dragon Heart skills to increase damage output as the battle rages on, while increasing critical hit chance as high as possible, making it a devastating weapon that grows stronger over time.

• Weapon – Darkness of Night – This weapon has a good base Attack stat of 180, but its 35% Affinity puts us in a good position to land repeated critical hits once combined with the armor and skill sets below.
• Armor – Valstrax Set – This armor set offers several Dragon Heart abilities that increase your attack power once your health drops below 80%.
• Talisman – Critical Look – This gives you a big boost to your affinity and increases your critical hit chance with each swing.
