Halfway through the Big 12’s 18-game schedule, the race to win the conference title is still open. No. 11 Baylor remains in the mix as it prepares to host Texas Tech on Saturday, but even the bottom-ranked Red Raiders (12-10, 1-8 Big 12) pose a threat in what’s overall is considered to be the nation’s strictest league.

Baylor (16-6, 5-4) won the first meeting on Jan. 17 at Texas Tech 81-74 behind 27 points from Keyonte George. The Red Raiders shot an impressive 50.9% from the field in that game, but only made 8 of 15 free throws and forced only three turnovers. The loss was the sixth in a string of eight straight losses to play the Big 12 for TTU, but the Red Raiders appear to be bouncing back to life.

Texas Tech celebrates a 23-point comeback win over No. 13 Iowa State Monday for its first Big 12 win of the season. That overtime win over the Cyclones, combined with last Saturday’s Big 12/SEC Challenge win at LSU, suddenly puts the Red Raiders on the brink of a winning streak.

Key to TTU’s two-game turnaround was forward Kevin Obanor, who hit 22 against LSU and 24 against Iowa State, drilling 6 of 11 tries from 3-point range in those two contests. Obanor long played as the Red Raiders’ de facto center against Iowa State when coach Mark Adams left with a small lineup to speed up the game after his team went behind.

If the Red Raiders take the same approach against Baylor, the Bears should be well-equipped to adapt as they have a large group of guards led by Keynote George, Adam Flagler and LJ Cryer, each averaging more than 14 ppg has. Baylor’s six-game winning streak ended Monday with a 76-71 loss in Texas after the Bears shot just 36.8% from the field, but they are one of the best offensive teams in the nation because of their guard play.

Baylor vs. Texas Tech Prediction, Tips

Featured Game | Baylor Bears vs. Texas Tech Red Raiders

Texas Tech has chalked up its first Big 12 win of the season — a 23-point comeback win over Iowa State — and the confidence gained there should continue. The Red Raiders played competitively in an 81-74 loss to Baylor on Jan. 17, despite playing underperforming defense, and should be able to compete in that game as well. Even during an 0-8 start to conference play, TTU lost six of those games by 10 or fewer. Baylor has only had one double-digit win against a league opponent this season and isn’t strong enough defensively to win by that large a margin. Prediction: Texas Tech +8
