Bay Area Projects Benefit from U.S. Infrastructure Funding – CBS San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – Just as President Biden was speaking about his infrastructure plans in Pennsylvania on Friday at the site of a bridge collapse in Pittsburgh, Bay Area congressional leaders talked about what infrastructure spending would mean here.
The area has a long list of desirable transport projects, many of which seem impossible due to their high cost. A $1.2 trillion spending bill could change that.

At San Francisco International Airport on Friday, Representative Jackie Speier (D-Hillsborough) and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi celebrated money for the renovation of Terminal One, while at Caltrain terminal at No. and Townsend in San Francisco are marking a major milestone in their electrification efforts . “
So the massive loss you see behind us of $250 million then resurrects the final stage of Harvey Milk Terminal One,” said Representative Jackie Speier.
This is truly Infrastructure Day, and the President’s infrastructure bill is likely to bring more of that in the future.
“So we’re proud to say we have $4.5 billion going to the Bay Area as part of that,” Speier said.

Beyond that first $4.5 billion, there’s even more money in the form of possible federal grants.
“There is an opportunity for these dollars to deliver the next generation of these big things,” said Metropolitan Transportation Commission spokesman John Goodwin. “Completed bringing BART to San Jose and to Santa Clara. Highway 37 has been completely transformed, this is an extremely important east-west corridor in the North Bay. ”
There is also the long-discussed second flight tube for BART, which the agency has planned for. And there’s hope that Caltrain might eventually reach the Transbay terminal in downtown San Francisco. All of these projects have been laid to rest, now the last opportunity may have come.
“And the Bay Area will have to compete with other metropolitan areas, not just in California but across the country,” Goodwin said. “But we believe the region will be very competitive.”
