Mario Strikers: Battle LeagueThe first major update of will add a character that fans have been longing for since before launch: Daisy. Yes, yes, the update introduces some other things as well, but come on! Daisy!! Finally!!!

Daisy has long been a mainstay on the Mario Sports games circuit, including previous entries in the striker Series, Nintendo’s version of soccer. When the news broke about a month before launch Mario Strikers: Battle League which indicated that Daisy could be banned from the game, Fans were angry.

Daisy’s absence turned out to be indicative of the broader problem with Mario Strikers: Battle League. First released for Switch last month, it received fair praise for his hard-hitting, frantic turn at soccer games. But it got a collective red card for launching Svelte on Content: it only featured 10 playable characters. And while battle league came out of the gate with five different football pitches, they are all… pretty much the same, each just a cosmetic change to the stadium’s backdrop.

The free update will be released on July 22nd and will be improved battle league‘s content library, sort of. Of course, Daisy, who is adept at technique and passing stats, is the headliner. A Twitter user succinctly captured the reaction from fans:

The second fan-favourite, Shy Guy, who has even stats across the board, will also join the roster, bringing it to a total of 12 characters. (The previous game, 2007 Supercharged Mario Strikers on the Wii, with 12 captains and eight sidekicks, for a total roster of 20.)

It will also add a new stadium – the sandy desert ruins – as well as a range of medieval knight-style gear. in the battle league, you can earn in-game currency by playing. You can spend this currency on certain stat-boosting gear for each of the playable characters. The new gear set improves the strength and shooting values of all characters who wear it. Give it to Wario!

You have to wonder about the reception Mario Strikers: Battle League would have been if Nintendo had delayed the game an extra month to allow all of these things to be playable at launch. Again, the biggest criticism of the game was how thin the content was. This obviously didn’t affect sales too much—according to sales tracking firm NPD, battle league was the best-selling Switch game over the last month – but there’s no data to clarify how much or how little time these players actually spend in the game.

Personally, I’ve already strayed from it: not enough to prevent games from being repeated. But the introduction of two new characters and some new gear could liven things up. Although it’s not there yet, with this week’s update, battle league will finally begin to match the full offering of a standard striker Game.

Nintendo says battle league will receive two more updates before the year is out. Battle League fans loved Daisy DLC
