Baltimore National Aquarium rescues and returns 15 cold-stricken turtles – CBS Baltimore

BALTIMORE (WJZ) – The National Aquarium has restored and returned 15 young sea turtles to their natural habitat off the coast of Florida.

The turtles have been at the aquarium since November after they were discovered cold-stricken off the coast of Massachusetts, according to aquarium staff.

The staff said: “During their stay, the baby turtles were treated for various ailments commonly associated with cold shock, such as pneumonia, dehydration, emaciation, shell damage, traumatic injury, etc. skin, eye damage and blood infections.

Aquarium staff have named the turtles — Kemp’s 13 childhood sea turtles and two green sea turtles — after the musical instruments.

The turtle band includes Piccolo, Trumpet, Viola, Kazoo, Harp, Xylophone, Fiddle, Maraca, Harmonica, Clarinet, Flute, Castanets, Bongo, Banjo, Cornet, according to aquarium staff.

Cornet, one of the green sea turtles, has successfully recovered after overcoming plastic debris.

Country Fish tank Animal Rescue Director Jennifer Dittmar said. “Marine debris continues to be a growing concern for the safety of sea turtles as they migrate along the waters of the east coast. The case of Cornet is a stark reminder of why the National Fish tank works to advocate for single-use plastic and to remove plastic pollution from waterways and wetlands. ”

Aquarium staff say the Animal Rescue program has responded to marine mammals and sea turtles stranded along nearly 3,190 miles of Maryland coastline. The program works with partners through the Atlantic Tightening Network to help respond, rescue, and release animals year-round.

Plastic pollution, climate change and the impact of other human activities impact the resilience of sea turtles. Organizations that set up the Sea Turtle Rescue and Stranding Network are facing increasing demands in response and recovery to stranded sea turtles, according to aquarium staff.

The National Aquarium helped coordinate the release of 14 turtles that were rescued and rehabilitated by the New England Aquarium, the New York Marine Rescue Center and the Atlantic Ocean Conservancy, employees said.

It is still caring for 16 turtles.
