Baldur’s Gate 3: Should you side with Sovereign Ember or Spaw in BG3?

As you explore the Underdark in Baldur’s Gate 3, you can find several mushroom-like creatures in this area. Their leader, Sovereign Spaw, has several quests to do regarding the duergar invading their lands. After you defeat them, Sovereign Embers wants to see what you did to them.

Should you agree to take him to the Sea Village and show him what happened there, Sovereign Ember will ask you if you’re ready to help him and bring down Sovereign Spaw. You must choose between the two as Ember promises war in the future. Should you side with Sovereign Glut or Sovereign Spaw in Baldur’s Gate 3?

What happens if you choose Sovereign Embers in Baldur’s Gate?

Should you choose Ember, he will prompt you to defeat Sovereign Spaw. This means you must return to Ebonlake Grotto and defeat him in battle. I encourage you and your Baldur’s Gate 3 group to be up to the task and take a short or long break before this encounter. This area is not far from the Arcane Tower.

Now if you make your way to the grotto, none of the citizens will try to fight you. Instead, they will all remain peaceful. This will persist until you reach Sovereign Spaw and speak to him. The only option you have is to fight Sovereign Spaw. When this happens in this Baldur’s Gate 3 encounter, everyone in the camp will be enemies, but Spaw will be your main target and you must defeat him to complete the encounter. Baelen might be in camp and you should hopefully avoid hitting him.

After defeating Spaw, the fight ends. Sovereign Ember will be in charge and will be the only one in charge of the grotto. He rewards you for your efforts with a pair of gauntlets called “Winter’s Claws”, in which the wearer inflicts “Crusted with Frost” on the targets for two turns each time it deals cold damage. Additionally, Sovereign Ember will still have the same Baldur’s Gate 3 quest asking you to bring him the head of the drow and protect his people.

Alternatively, side with Sovereign Spaw and prevent Embers from taking over in your Baldur’s Gate 3 campaign. During this encounter you have two options. You can say that you will not be involved in this and Sovereign Ember will try to attack you. The last option, however, is to fight Ember directly and tell him that if he wants blood, you can give it to him. Regardless of the two choices below, the outcome remains the same: you must fight Embers. There are no skill checks for this interview.

When you defeat Embers in Baldur’s Gate 3, he’ll have a handful of items on him. He will have a Scroll of Blur, Scroll of Holding Person, Bone Cap, Accelerating Spores, Lump of Mykonid Flesh, Nightlight Frond, Poison Spores and Bite of the Villain. You can loot it and use it to complete the quest to help the Avenge Ember Circle.

After going both ways, I felt it was a better idea to side with Sovereign Spaw and keep things in order. While Sovereign Ember is right and Spaw didn’t help him when his circle needed him, it wasn’t convincing enough to denounce the current King of Spores in my Baldur’s Gate 3 campaign. It was better to use Spaw to set things in order and eliminate Ember before he could cause any more trouble.

Both encounters were not too difficult. The fight against Sovereign Spaw could get out of control if his allies catch him, but I could take him out in the first turn by shooting him off the edge of his throne with Eldritch Blast.
