The mayor said many cars and buildings were damaged by the hail.

She said some hailstones were up to 11cm in diameter.

Video footage in Spanish media showed the hailstones bouncing off cars on the road like golf balls.

More storms were expected in the region on Wednesday.

Severe storms were forecast for eastern Spain both on land and in the Mediterranean after severe heat waves in the summer.
