Autopsy: Steelers QB Haskins was drunk when fatally hit – WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins was legally intoxicated and had been on drugs before he was fatally hit by a dump truck on a Florida freeway last month, according to an autopsy report released Monday.
The Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office said Haskin’s blood alcohol level was 0.20 when he was fatally struck just before dawn on April 9 on Interstate 595 near Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. That’s 2.5 times the 0.08 legal limit for driving in the state.
According to the University of California, Davis and other universities, it would have taken someone Haskins’ weight, 230 pounds (104 kilograms), to have at least 10 drinks in the hours before his death to reach that level. He also had the powerful pain reliever ketamine and its metabolite norketamine in his system. The drug can be prescribed by a doctor, but can also be abused recreationally. The report doesn’t say why the former Ohio State University star had it in his system.
According to the report, investigators found Haskins’ car with no gas near where he was hit. A woman he was with told investigators Haskins, 24, went to get fuel. Witnesses said he was trying to wave down cars and was standing in the center lane when he was hit by the truck and then an SUV. According to the report, he died from blunt force trauma. No charges were brought.
The Steelers told investigators Haskins had no mental health problems and never made suicide threats. They said he drank heavily at times and used marijuana at other times, but was not known to use any other recreational drugs. The coroner ruled that the death was an accident.
Haskins had been in South Florida for practice with some of his Steelers teammates. According to the report, Haskins had gone to dinner with teammates and then to a club, possibly in Miami, with a friend or cousin. The two got into a fight and separated.
Haskins had called his wife Kalabrya in Pittsburgh shortly before his stroke and told her he had run out of gas. She told a 911 dispatcher she was concerned when he didn’t call back and answer her calls. She could be heard praying on the recording after the dispatcher put her on hold to see if anything had been reported. The dispatcher then told her to stay on her phone and someone would contact her.
Haskins played at Ohio State in 2018, setting multiple school records and being named MVP in both the Big Ten championship game and the Buckeyes’ Rose Bowl win over the Washington Huskies.
Haskins, a 2019 NFL first-round draft pick from Washington, was released by the team after winning 3-10 in two seasons. He was signed by Pittsburgh as a development QB, but he didn’t appear in a game last season.
