Auburn football plan will do Tigers Bryan Harsin no favors

Auburn football won’t have it easy in 2022 with the country’s toughest schedule, according to the ESPN Football Power Index.

Bryan Harsin endured a rocky offseason filled with personnel changes and roster drama. His job security depends on all the noise quieting down with a fruitful 2022 season.

Unfortunately for the head coach, setting an acceptable record is easier said than done for the Tigers given their schedule.

ESPN’s Football Power Index ranks Auburn’s power as #1 in the country. That means no one will face a more difficult slab than Harsin’s team.

Auburn’s football schedule is the toughest in the country

  • 3 Sept vs. Mercer (N/A)
  • 10 September vs. San Jose State (109)
  • September 17 vs. Penn State (12)
  • September 24 vs. Missouri (55)
  • 1 Oct vs. LSU (11)
  • 8 October in Georgia (3)
  • 15 Oct at Ole Miss (17)
  • 22 Oct Bye
  • 29 Oct vs. Arkansas (29)
  • 5 November in the state of Mississippi (24)
  • November 12 vs. Texas A&M (14)
  • Nov 19 vs WKU (65)
  • November 26 in Alabama (1)

The Tigers only have four away games this year, but they couldn’t be more difficult. You get the #1 and #3 teams in FPI, Alabama and Georgia, plus #17 Ole is and #24 Mississippi State.

On the plus side, Auburn is ranked 10th on the FPI for 2022, putting them ahead of all but two of their opponents on paper.

On the other hand, the Tigers also finished 10th after Week 1 of the 2022 season. That didn’t stop them from losing to Penn State, Georgia, Texas A&M, Mississippi State, South Carolina, Alabama and Houston.

Bryan Harsin is coming off a 6-7 season. No one would blame him for losing away to the likes of Georgia or Alabama, but he needs to get through this season without missing too many of those other games.

Circle Mercer, San Jose State, Mizzou, Arkansas, MSU, and WKU as must-wins. That’s the bare minimum to match last year’s total of six wins. Harsin has yet to improve, which means he’s trailing Penn State, LSU, Ole Miss and Texas A&M. The head coach beat the Tigers and Rebels last year, which is worth it.
