Bryan Harsin faced a lot of pressure in his second season leading the Auburn football program.
While there were signs of promise in the first year, a second-half defeat and poor performance at the Birmingham Bowl left Bryan Harsin 6-7 in his first year as head coach of the Auburn team. .
Although a challenging first year for any incoming head coach, Harsin was hired from Boise State to replace a good, but not great Gus Malzahn to do one thing: Put Auburn ahead of . Malzahn excelled in going 8-4 and had a special season every few years when the schedule lined up with bitter rivals Alabama and Georgia at home. Harsin faced tremendous pressure.
This is what Auburn will have to navigate in the second year of the Harsin era in The Plains.

This is downright simple given Auburn’s overall viability in 2022. The way the Tigers do in their first five games will let everyone and their brother know if this show can turn around. change Harsin’s position or not. Auburn should look at the scoreline 5-0, or at least 4-1, for hope for a bright future in the second half. A new starting midfielder is not important, as the first five matches are all at home.
Auburn will lead 2-0 pretty easily with home wins over Mercer and San Jose State before the first kneeling test arrives. While the Tigers pushed Bang Penn to the brink in Happy Valley, the outcome was only in horseshoes and hand grenades. With Sean Clifford returning to Penn State, Auburn will need to play a full game to avoid a disorganized sweep at the hands of the Nittany Lions.
After that, Auburn had two very easy home games against the rebuilding LSU team and the SEC East middleweight team in Missouri. Those are more winnable than Penn State. However, there are two sides to Auburn when the Nittany Lions come to town: A loud Jordan-Hare stadium crowd and the ever-present southeast humidity in mid-September.
So out of these five games, Auburn will win 5-0 or 4-1, depending on the outcome of the Penn State game. Then this is where it gets very interesting…
Under any circumstances, Auburn would defeat Georgia in Athens. It hasn’t happened in nearly two decades, and it hasn’t happened Among the Hedges during Georgia’s national title defense. Auburn didn’t stand a good chance of stealing one on the road at a rebuilding Ole Miss before their October 22 goodbye. At best, Auburn is drawing 1-1 in those two games with Ole Miss’s win.
Looking at their last five games, Auburn didn’t beat Alabama at Bryant-Denny in their regular-season finale, so that’s a definite loss just like the Georgia road game. Auburn should have beaten Western Kentucky the day before the Iron Bowl, but sleeping on the Hilltoppers would be a big mistake. Their other three games are home to Arkansas, at Mississippi State and at home to Texas A&M.
Although Auburn could beat any of these three teams, the Tigers didn’t win all three. They could drop all three, but that doesn’t seem likely. Arkansas is the team most likely to win because of the bye game at home. Mississippi State is a trap game with home days versus the huge Texas A&M. Let’s say they split with a win at Mississippi State and a loss at Texas A&M.
At best, Auburn is on a 10-2 (6-2) scoreline with heavy losses to Georgia and Alabama. If it hits fans, it could be a 4-8 team, but it’s an absolute extreme here. In the end, Auburn would go somewhere 6-6 or better 9-3 with a big win over Texas A&M. If they draw 8-4, they are losing to Penn State, Georgia, Alabama and Texas A&M. That will help Harsin keep his job.
Auburn doesn’t have an easy schedule for next year, but the Tigers must improve under Harsin.
