Perhaps in the league’s matches so far, the Italian 7th seed Matteo Berrettini win the battle of the ‘big guys’ by defeating the 18-year-old Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz in a 5-episode horror series on Rod Laver Arena. The Italian player won with a dramatic score of 6-2.7-6 (3), 4-6,2-6.7-6 (5) to book the round of 16.
The match started with Alcaraz having the upper hand. He served well and took the first six points of the game. He even had multiple break points in the second game but couldn’t convert. After four tense matches, they were leveled at 2-2 and that’s when Berrettini stepped up. The Italian player served much better and took advantage of Alcaraz’s unwarranted mistakes. He soon took a double break lead and won the set 6-2.
Despite hitting the winner, too many unenforceable errors in his serve also cost him in the second set. Berrettini executed his serve to perfection but Alcaraz also went ahead towards the end of the set. They eventually played a tie break which the Italian showed his experience to take it and lead by 2 sets.
Everything is over for Alcaraz is Berrettini served almost perfectly in the third set. But the distraction from the Italian in the game that served him cost him when Alcaraz broke him. The 18-year-old got the momentum he needed and sealed the fourth set with a third 6-4 win.
The Spaniard continued his momentum into the fourth set and, after several long games, broke Berrettini’s serve to take the lead. He got another break and won the set 6-2. The fifth set is perhaps the most competitive. Alcaraz might be in better shape but Berrettini also serves well. Both players were pumping and testing each other to their absolute limits.
The final set went into a 10-point tiebreak due to a few poor forehand errors. Alcaraz. Berrettini used his experience to keep his nerve and eventually win the match.
Berrettini praises Alcaraz .’s efforts
In the post-match interview, Jim Express delivery immediately questioned Berrettini about Alcaraz’s level. The Italian praised Alcaraz and said he doesn’t even have an ATP point at his age!
“He’s great! I think at his age I don’t even have an ATP point. Yes, he’s impressive. He can only improve. By playing matches like this , he showed his potential. Fortunately, I won today but a big congratulations to him,” Berrettini said.
He analyzed the game more deeply and pointed out his shortcomings. “In my mind, I feel confident. In the third set there were a couple of games where I was 30-0 and I felt that momentum was on my side but then tennis! I was broken and in the fourth set my energy was not up to the mark but at the start of the fifth set I thought to scramble for every point.” he say.
