Astros are making a pitching move that could hurt the postseason stretch run

The Houston Astros have had a good rotation this season that has proven successful, but a mess with the system in place could affect the final stretch.

That Houston Astros were successful with their current starting rotation. They have several good pitchers and messing with the existing system could affect the last stretch.

Most recently, manager Dusty Baker revealed Christian Javier will be skipped in the rotation and could serve in a bullpen role or “piggyback” with a starter.

Javier has done very well this season. He has a 2.88 ERA, a .179 batting average, and a 1.00 WHIP. He’s always been one of the best starters, so it seems odd that the Astros would put him back in the bullpen even though he’s relatively young.

However, he has proven he can pitch well as a relief while some other starting pitchers could not.

Astros: Cristian Javier has had success before

Javier has experience as a reliever and has done well, but most starting pitchers in Houston have not. Corresponding Ben Silver from Inside the Astros, “Javier has played with relief for almost half of his big league career. He even kicked off 2022 as an aide, piggybacking on a litany of different Astros launches.”

In 2021, Javier relieved more games than he started. He has served a total of 36 games and started only nine. He had a decent season, producing a 3.55 ERA, .186 BAA and 1.18 WHIP. Though he’s fared much better as a starter this season, he’s still showing potential as a helper, and when the Astros need a helper, it’s best to use one that has a good track record.

Especially with the upcoming playoffs and World Series aspirations for Houston, having a bevy of quality guns is never a bad thing. Javier in a utility role outside of the bullpen could be an extremely valuable asset, helping the club in the long run.
