Germany were in complete control, leading 1-0 at half-time – and still dominating possession up to full-time – but tactical changes and substitutions by Japan coach Hajime Moriyasu worked wonders.
Ritsu Doan equalized in the 75th minute before Takuma Asano scored the winner eight minutes later.
The victory was particularly sweet for the two goal scorers, both of whom practice their trade with German Bundesliga clubs.
Doan had come on just four minutes before his goal, while Asano came on in a double substitution in the 57th minute as the Japanese tried to revive their pressing game.
