Matt Chapman trade: A’s asking price from the Phillies revealed.
The asking price of Oakland A from the Philadelphia Phillies may be too high in the hopes of acquiring Matt Chapman.
To acquire Matt Chapman, Oakland A’s wanted to dig deep into the young Philadelphia Phillies’ talented team.
Person A appears to be seeking the services of Andrew Painter, Mick Abel and/or Bryson Stott.
It’s easy to see why the Phillies were hesitant to trade one of these pieces for Chapman.
The third player will be 29 years old this season. During his career, Chapman scored .243/.330/.478 with +120 wRC. In four seasons, he hit 111 home runs. In 2021, Chapman has 27 appearances and 72 RBIs, he’s walked 80 times but has 202 peak hits of his career. In third place, he has a block rate of 0.987.
While Chapman seems to have some power and can be average, it’s an extremely high attack rate. It’s too high to believe Chapman deserves the Phillies to give up the potential from so many top talent.
Painter was drafted by the Phillies in 2021 while still in high school. Fangraphs describe Painter as an old-fashioned, adventurous teenager. “Painter is a prototype prep arm with an XXL frame, superior arm durability and a fresh feel to shoot and like many of this ilk high school students, he has a shot in the middle if everyone things that come together,” by Eric Longenhagen and Tess Taruskin of Fangraphs. Painter is not expected to host the major tournament until 2026.
Abel is a top Phillies lead according to Fangraphs. The right arm is expected to be part of the top of the swing arm. He wears the Low-A shirt at the end of 2021 after leaving high school in 2020, and could be ready for the big leagues in 2024. It’s hard to imagine the Phillies leaving the arm to Chapman.
Of the candidates that Team A is asking for, Stott is the closest candidate to be ready for the biggest tournament. The substitute is playing for the AAA team after impressive promotion through the Phillies in 2021, being included in the Arizona Fall League. It is predicted that Stott will take over the big league SS role from Didi Gregorius at some point in 2022, where he is expected to become a fixture for many years to come.
It’s good for Philly fans to see that management isn’t keen to scrap some great talent in exchange for a named pick that seems too risky. Chapman would be a good player if he made it to the big leagues. But not at that price point.
