Artur Beterbiev vs. Anthony Yarde fight prediction, odds, undercard, preview, start time, how to watch

One of boxing’s most exciting fighters returns to the ring on Saturday night when Artur Beterbiev defends his WBC, WBO and IBF light heavyweight championships against Anthony Yarde. The fight will take place at Wembley Arena in London (2:30 p.m. ET, ESPN+).

Beterbiev (18-0, 18 KOs) has a deserved reputation as a grueling force of nature. None of his opponents made it to the closing bell, which includes the seven men Beterbiev defeated in championship bouts.

In November 2017, Beterbiev won his first world title when he stopped Enrico Kolling in the 12th round to capture the vacant IBF title. After two title defenses, Beterbiev faced WBC Champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk and scored a 10th-round stoppage in a thrilling bout, unifying the two titles. Beterbiev would again defend his titles twice before aiming for another belt. In his most recent fight, he defeated WBO champion Joe Smith Jr. to tie three of the four world titles in boxing at 175 pounds.

A fight with WBA champion Dmitry Bivol tops many boxing fans’ “dream fight” lists. Bivol has called for a fight and Beterbiev recently said he “of course” wants to fight Bivol to establish an undisputed champion in the division.

If the undisputed championship fight with Bivol cannot take place, the WBC declared at its annual conference that the winner of Beterbiev vs. Yarde must next defend his title against Callum Smith.

Yarde (23-2, 22 KOs) comes into the fight on a three-fight win streak. He has been Beterbiev’s mandatory opponent since his fourth-round stoppage win over Lyndon Arthur in December 2021, a win that allowed Yarde to avenge one of his two career losses after Arthur made a split decision at their first meeting a year earlier would have.

In his only attempt to win a world title to date, Yarde suffered a TKO loss to Sergey Kovalev in the 11th round. Yarde had done a good job in that fight, including injuring Kovalev badly in round 8, resulting in Kovalev’s corner threatening to end the fight. In the end, Kovalev was able to collect himself and stop a badly fatigued Yarde late in the fight.

A talented fighter, Yarde has been criticized for not taking the steps to maximize his talent, including sticking to coaches and training methods that many believe held him back.

This is a fight with enormous potential for action. Beterbiev has one of the most fan-friendly styles in boxing and Yarde has serious power. Both men also get hit fairly often, leading to a strong possibility that the fight will end with a man flat on his back.

What makes Beterbiev so good is that his aggression works because he’s also very solid in his fundamentals, which is evident from the long list of achievements he’s achieved in his amateur career. While he’s tough and ready to take a close-range punch or take a shot himself, Beterbiev is able to do what he does because he has the technical foundation to cut the ring, work inwards and to be discharged with sharp blows to the body and head.

Beterbiev’s body shots could play a big part in the fight, with Yarde’s conditioning being an issue against Kovalev. Still, between the combination of Yarde’s power and Beterbiev being 38, Yarde is a live underdog coming in.

However, Beterbiev is so talented and so relentless that it’s hard to see how Yarde doesn’t eventually get overwhelmed by the veteran champion’s non-stop attack, leading to a mid-round stoppage.
