It might seem strange to compare a free-to-play battle royale to an art-house indie game, but here it is: Apex Legends is basically the Trip from first-person shooters.
The latter, which was developed by flower Creator thatgamecompany and published in 2012, is a game about traversing the desert ruins of an ancient civilization through non-verbal communication with a series of total strangers. It is possible to remain with the same player throughout the playthrough. This allows the game’s themes of connection and trust to surpass beauty and spill into the sublime.
Apex Legendsthe titanium fall Developer Respawn released 2019 as a foray into the thriving genre dominated by PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Fourteen days, is a game about launching canisters of noxious gas from the balcony of an apartment building before ziplining through a public park to escape the shrinking, deadly frontier of an ethereal circle. It’s also largely about non-verbal communication, and it can do that Alsosometimes turn into the sublime.
With the growing ubiquity of battle royales as a free-to-play phenomenon in the late 2010s, it made sense that many apex Players dipped their toes in the water without a friend or two next to them. And, coupled with voice chat’s tendency to often suck, it also suggested that thousands of gamers could benefit from some form of non-verbal communication.
Enter: the ping system, which has long allowed FPS players to place a beacon on places, events and interesting objects. Respawn took the idea (variations of it appeared in series like Left 4 Dead and Battlefield) and expanded it tenfold, allowing players, for example, to not only point out a weapon’s location, but the exact one Type the weapon. Crucially, the ping system was combined with each character’s different voice lines to give players as much information as possible, whether they’re in the next room or far away on the map.
The updated ping system worked so well that both apexThe biggest competitors from back then — PUBG and Fourteen days — Added custom ping systems within six months of Respawn’s release. And when Call of Duty: Warzone went live the following year, it followed suit.
I’m always fascinated by how first person shooters talk to the player without actually saying anything – I still remember running determination strikes at strangers in the early days of the MMO and marvels at the unmistakable imagery of the abilities of each class. This hunter just used his super on this bossI could tell myself Time for me to also talk about the damage.
what does apex But what’s really special is how the designers so skillfully blend this type of visual vocabulary with the game’s actual communication mechanics. Its playable heroes (the legends of the same name) are recognizable from hundreds of meters away. When I see a Lifeline player take cover behind a distant boulder, I know what a powerful support character she can be once we’ve successfully dispatched her teammates. If I don’t have the weapon to take them out from that distance, I can ping them as a threat to my teammate playing Vantage, which excels in long-range encounters. Once we’ve eliminated the enemy squad (hopefully), I can ping all the heavy ammo and sniper rifle attachments under the loot, which will keep Vantage in combat form for the next firefight. It’s an organic flow of information from Respawn to me and my teammates, all via a sleek ping system and a vibrant, distinctive art style. And the whole time I didn’t say a single word.
That brings me back to Trip. The real revelation of this game for me was how downright intimate it could be. This person could have set off alone at any moment, but here we are, hiking up those snowy cliffs, surfing down the sparkling slopes of a mountain lost in time, just the two of us, alone together.
Last but not least, it surprised me to feel this kind of digital connection in me Apex Legends, just minutes after I headshot a character who’d jetpacked into a ledge I’d trapped with my teammates, in the final moments of a long and arduous journey across a cartoonishly alive island. Coming full circle, I knew I could count on Vantage because she’d been communicating with me all along—but this Bloodhound? They were calm.
However, you have 17 kills. So I let it slide.
