Jury saw video of murder suspect Anton Todt, 46, told police he killed his entire family and then attempted suicide for weeks while living with the bodies. As seen in the footage, the defendant told detectives he “pulled out” of using a knife and instead attempted to overdose on Benadryl. When asked why he didn’t use a gun, he cited Florida’s three-day gun wait list.
Todt said he killed his children Alexander Todt13, Tyler Todt11 and Zoe Todt4, before Christmas 2019. Police found him with their bodies, his wife’s body megan death42, and even the dead family dog Airy at her home in Celebration, Fla. on January 13, 2020.
The defense is waiting until later in the trial to make an opening statement. Prosecutors said Monday Todt confessed to the killings and told investigators he planned the killings with his wife believing that the apocalypse is imminent.

Todt gave the detectives a detailed account of how he killed his children and Breezy. For example, he said he held a pillow over Zoe’s head for 10 to 15 minutes.
“How long has she been kicking and screaming?” asked a detective.
“Just for a few minutes,” Todt said.
He claimed he and his wife Megan consulted about the murders. Todt said he stabbed and then choked Alek as the boy struggled. Megan went “halfway” through this murder, he said.
“It was quick,” he said when asked how long it took to kill his eldest son.
Megan was “meditating” as he killed Tyler downstairs, Todt said.
He claimed that they “love” their children.
“We had redemption in mind,” he said of the reason for killing her.
Todt said he spent the weeks at home with his dead family while he tried (and failed) to kill himself. He said he left home on several occasions, including for alcohol and Benadryl to check the mail, and also for fast food, going to McDonald’s “once or twice”. He said he also went to a separate cottage to retrieve his daughter’s Mickey Mouse necklace, which he could not find.
He reportedly took a complete 180 with this alleged confession and later wrote to his estranged father that Megan alone killed the children and then herself. He claimed she fed the children a poisoned cake.
“In short, she gave them the Benadryl/Tylenol PM cake, separated them and woke up at 11:30 am [p.m.]stabbed and then choked everyone,” he wrote in a letter received on June 19, 2020 The Orlando Sentinel. “When I got that news I ran to the bathroom and threw up – I was weak.”
The only major resemblance to his earlier alleged confession is that he said he tried and failed to die by suicide in the weeks following the death.
However, in a video, the accused Todt described that he carried out the murders with the support of his wife.
He claimed Megan drank wine and took Benadryl to die by suicide, but that backfired. She lay there for what seemed like hours and didn’t die, he said. After this version of events, she finally asked him to smother her with the pillow. She said she wanted to be with her “babies.”
“If you love me,” she is said to have said in the defendant’s confession, which has since been retracted, “you can do it.”
As a rule, one cannot legally consent to the killing; the law simply does not permit consent in such matters. The only exceptions are physician-assisted deaths in a minority of states as palliative care when death of natural causes is near, and these laws require very specific judicial procedures lest death be considered homicide.
