Anthony Davis on his way back to the Lakers lineup Tuesday vs. Nets

After losing a month to an MCL sprain, Los Angeles Lakers star Anthony Davis is expected to return to the squad January 25 for a game against the Brooklyn Nets.

Before Lakers beating the Orlando Magic without Anthony Davis, Los Angeles fans got a sneak peek at Davis’ condition after he sprained his MCL.

The cheers indicate what shots he has taken and how ready fans are to see him grace the pitch. On Tuesday, it looks like AD may finally go to court with more warmups.

With the Lakers sitting in eighth place in the conference with a 23-24 record, Davis’ timely return will make all the difference to the upcoming knockouts.

Looking at the match logs, it doesn’t seem like the Lakers necessarily need AD to seek victory: the Lakers are 10-10 without Davis during the season. But in his MCL sprain, the Lakers did slightly worse, going 7-9 as Davis recovered.

Advanced stats appeared to tell the same story. When Davis went public, the Lakers had a worse net score (-2.5) than when Davis was absent (-0.8). Where Davis contributes is in defense, but only marginally: Davis put up a defensive rating of 108.0 on the floor compared to 110.4 when out.

That being said, at least Davis can only help the Lakers, in terms of defense. The Lakers have been average all year, and they definitely need the best of their roster to be able to overcome that and win a playoff spot rather than a starter.

Teammate LeBron James said: “Just having him in the ring gives us a lot of offensive and defensive capabilities.

Even though the Lakers have had a rough year, AD remains one of the greatest in the league – and getting him is all the Lakers can hope for as they play on the bubble. Anthony Davis on his way back to the Lakers lineup Tuesday vs. Nets
