ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ) –A 41-year-old Annapolis man faces a list of charges in one taken over the weekend sent two kids to the hospitalauthorities said.
John Estep was charged with first-degree assault, use of a dangerous weapon with intent to cause injury, and reckless endangerment, among other counts, Annapolis Police said.
The charges stem from a Saturday night shooting that left a 14-year-old boy and a 10-year-old girl injured. Both were taken to the hospital for treatment.
Officers were called to Estep’s Obery Court home around 6 p.m. to respond to a complaint about teenagers banging on his door. They were gone when the police arrived.
Around 7:12 p.m., someone reported that a group of teenagers were kicking on the door of a neighbor’s house. Minutes later, there was a report of gunfire in the area.
When officers returned, Estep told them someone kicked in the door and entered his home, police said.
Estep told police he opened fire on the intruder, then shot at a group of people through a window before stepping outside and firing a shot into the ground, police said.
A 14-year-old boy was shot twice in the lower extremities and a 10-year-old girl was shot in the back.
The children were taken to an area hospital. The boy has been released, but the girl remains hospitalized in stable condition, police said.
During the investigation, police discovered Estep’s door was damaged and 25 used bullet casings were found inside his home and another was found on his porch.
Police said another shell casing was found outside the home, but it was not clear if that shell was related to Saturday night’s shooting.
Estep, who turned himself in, was later released for free identification.
The incident is still under investigation and police are asking anyone with information about the incident to call detectives at 410-260-3439.
