Anitta wows Coachella with Snoop Dogg, Saweetie and lots of loot

Brazilian singer Anitta has been a superstar in Latin America for years, but is only now making a concerted move to the US – and that move received major exclamation point with her lavish, sweeping and breathtakingly sexy performance at the Coachella festival Friday night.

Musically, the 45-minute set featured a startling mix of genres, emphasizing the Brazilian and Latin music that made her a star, but also adding pop – her Ryan Tedder-led hit “Faking Love” with a brief cameo from Saweetie – rock – Pop-Punk ‘Boys Don’t Cry’, also from their newly released album ‘Versions of Me’ – Hip-Hop and a Diplo-led dance party that rounded out the last third of the set.

The set was just as varied and arena-level visuals. It started with a stage set modeled after the Brazilian favelas she grew up in, with a pool table – where Snoop hung out and smoked a joint – in front of fake buildings where her musicians performed, while Anitta and about 20 male and female Dancers performed worked in front of the stage. Snoop introduced Anitta to the Coachella crowd and then mostly stood back, watching the booty action while tugging on his spliff. During the following dance segments, Anitta (who is openly bisexual) twerked and fondled both female and male dancers.

About 20 minutes later there was a dance routine while Anitta changed, and then the set switched to a more urban setting – the fake buildings turned into a giant graffiti wall – as did the music, which slowed down as they started “Girl From Rio”, which interpolates Astrud Gilberto’s “Girl From Ipanema”, probably the most famous Brazilian song in the world.
For the final segment, Diplo – whose music has long been steeped in Latin and Brazilian influences – took center stage, shelling out remixes like “Vai Malandra” and “Medley Funk (Ai Vivo)” while Anitta and the dancers practiced in earnest to achieve his Climax with a booty solo that can only be called: the dancers rallied around her as she twerked with remarkable skill.
And with that, it’s safe to say that Anitta has made a name for herself — watch the Coachella livestream for replays on Saturday.
