Angels invest high risk in Noah Syndergaard, hoping for high returns in 2022 – The Athletic

NS Angel generated their first major attention of the season, reportedly signed Noah Syndergaard to a one-year, $21 million contract for the 2022 season.

There are two ways to look at this signature. One – this is a big investment in a player who has played two halves in the last two years. The Angels need to win in 2022, and Syndergaard practically hasn’t helped his team win in three years.

And second, it’s a signing that shows the team has to work hard to win instantly. And it shows they’re willing to take risks with an extremely steep pitcher. There is no other reason to spend a lot of money on a player in a season unless the expectation is to win that season.

The Angels have not confirmed signing with Syndergaard. ESPN, which first reported it, said the deal was pending. The Angels will also forgo the second-round draft pick as Syndergaard, 29, recently extended his qualifying offer from the New York Mets – the team he spent his first seven years with MLB job.

The Angels entered the season with a clear goal in mind. It is to improve their sales staff. Rotation. Byre. Organizational depth.

This signing is a reflection of that. But it also reduces a lot to the available 2022 salary fund. During GM’s meetings last week, Angels general manager Perry Minasian didn’t close down on a payroll increase in 2022. But he wouldn’t commit to it either.

The Angels’ salary in 2021 is slightly higher at $180 million. After signing with Syndergaard, Angels’ payroll for 2022 will be around $140 million.
