The alert feature, added to phones by developers at Google, shows an icon in the right corner of the phone display when the microphone or camera is in use.

It glows green when you open the camera or record a voice message, but it can also alert you to shady apps that are using these features without your knowledge.

“First it shows an icon, which then transitions to a dot that persists until the app is either dismissed or closed,” says Android.

“When a user taps the indicators, a dialog box opens showing that an app is currently using the camera, microphone, or both.”

Users can then review a history of which apps have used your camera or microphone and see if the features have been turned on.

The Android 12 software update launched last year shared the Google feature with millions of phones worldwide.

Apple introduced a similar feature in 2020 when it revealed its little orange dot as part of iOS 14.

The dot also appears on the right side of the screen as a recording indicator, giving users a way to see when they’re being heard or viewed.

“An indicator will appear at the top of your screen when an app is using your microphone or camera,” Apple said.

“And in Control Center, you can see if an app has recently used it.”

An orange dot means the mic is in use by an app on the iPhone, while a green dot means an app is using the camera or the camera and mic, according to the tech giant.
