An elderly cancer patient’s Hilux was allegedly stolen during a pursuit by Queensland Police of another allegedly stolen car in Toowoomba

An 80-year-old cancer patient said he was hit “damn hard” when a young man allegedly stole his prized ute during a police chase west of Brisbane.

Ray Sweedman was at his home in Millmerran, near Toowoomba, on Tuesday night when four young men arrived.

Because it was “so hot,” Sweedman kept his home and garage open.

One of the men allegedly grabbed his keys and drove off in his “fairly new” car – a 2021 Toyota Hilux double cab – while three others ran away.

Sweedman says he was able to open a car door and ask, “What are you doing?” just before the man allegedly sped off.

“Fucking tough, fine, I’ll tell you that,” Sweedman told 7NEWS when asked how he was coping with the ordeal.

“I just had chemotherapy and it friggin’ blew my mind — and at that.

“I’ve lived here for 50 years and nothing like this has ever happened.”

Earlier police in Toowoomba had been chasing the four men who were in a four wheel drive allegedly stolen in Ipswich.

Police said officers spotted the car around 5pm, allegedly driving on the wrong side of a road in Toowoomba.

They chased the car to Millmerran, where officers tire-spiked the car, which was soon dumped by the group.

The men then came to Sweedman’s house. The man who allegedly stole his Hilux escaped and remains on the run.

The three others who ran away were found and arrested by the police.

The men, aged 18, 20 and 21, were charged with multiple offenses including unlawful use of a motor vehicle and willful entry into a home.

They are due to appear in Toowoomba Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

Police have asked the public to keep an eye out for the stolen Hilux.
