Amir El-Masry of Egypt as a young Mohamed Al-Fayed in The Crown

Egyptian rising star Amir El-Masry (“Limbo”) has been cast in the offspring Egyptian billionaire Former Harrods owner Mohamed al-Fayed in upcoming fifth season of Netflix’s The Crown diversity can reveal.

Netflix confirmed the casting but declined to provide any further details.

As previously reported by Diversity, Salim Daw (“Oslo”) was cast as the older incarnation of Mohamed al-Fayed, the father of Dodi Fayed, with whom he was romantically involved Diana, Princess of Wales when both died in a car crash in Paris, France on August 31, 1997.

Cairo-born, London-raised Amir El Masry broke through internationally in 2016 with a small featured role as a hotel chef opposite Tom Hiddleston in the Susanne Bier-directed miniseries The Night Manager. He recently received critical acclaim for his role as a Syrian asylum seeker living on a small Scottish island in Ben Sharrock’s drama Limbo, for which El Masry won a BAFTA Scotland Acting Award. El Masry also played a role as a military chief in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Though Netflix and The Crown producers aren’t revealing storylines, the casting of two characters, both playing Mohamed al-Fayed, suggests that alongside a glimpse into the final months of Diana’s life, Viewers will learn some essential backstories of this Egyptian businessman, now 93 years old, who rose to fame in 2008 Queen Elizabeth’s husband Prince Philip ordered British security services to kill Princess Diana to prevent her from marrying a Muslim man and having his baby.

As previously reported by diversity, The Kite Runner star Khalid Abdalla has been cast as Dodi, who will play alongside Elizabeth Debicki (“Tenet”) as Diana in the highly anticipated fifth season of the show, due out on Netflix in November 2022.

Other well-known leading actors of the fifth “The Crown” part are Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth; Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip, Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret; Dominic West as Prince Charles; Olivia Williams as Camilla Parker Bowles; and Jonny Lee Miller will also appear as Prime Minister John Major.
