The rarer a card you own, the higher value trade you can purchase from a player. It also makes it easier to negotiate and potentially trade in from your previous card. Some Pokémon cards have been known to sell for thousands of dollars if they are in the right rarity form and someone is willing to buy the physical version.

Detailing of a rarity

There are many different rare cards, and there is an easy way to identify their rarity. The more common ones have a small black circle in the lower right or left part of the map.

Holographic Pokemon Cards

The holographic rarity has a special shell that surrounds the Pokémon. It sparkles and shines much more than the traditional card.

Next you have reversed holographic cards. These cards only have the holographic glow, similar to the previous holographic cards but around the text. The Pokemon inside the card doesn’t contain a holographic glow and instead looks more like the original card print, but still has a few differences that make it stand out.

Ultra Rare Pokemon Cards

The next card type takes things up a notch. The many cards in this category are considered a tier of Ultra Rare, higher, and are much more difficult to get from booster packs. These cards have an EX, Star, LV.X, LEGEND, Prime, EX, and GX next to their name at the top of the Pokémon cards.

These are characterized by unique graphics and there are two different variants of these cards. First, there’s the half Pokemon body and half arts cards, which only let you see half of the Pokemon inside. On the other, you can see the full image of the Pokemon in the picture.

The cards that contain the entire body of the Pokemon with one of the card IDs on it with a sharp color are considered rarer.

Secret Rare Pokemon Cards

Aside from half body and full body, Pokémon cards are the secret rare cards. You can recognize these cards by the number at the bottom right. Traditionally, all Pokémon cards have a number that indicates where they are in the lineup. For example, the Pikachu card is 58/102, showing that it’s the 52nd card out of the 102 it was originally released with. The secret rare cards are above this correct number.

They also add flair to your card and have a different art and color than the traditional card.

In addition to the secret rare cards, there is the Rainbow Rare. They’re a bit flashier than the secret rares, and they also go higher than the traditional numbers shown on the card. You’ll automatically know you’ve got one by the distinct shine and different colors that spread across the card. Some of these have sold for thousands of dollars.

VMax and Tag Team Pokémon Cards

The latest form of rare cards includes tag team cards and VMax. The tag team cards feature a pair of Pokémon working together, with both names at the top. These were originally introduced in Team Up! booster packs.

The VMax cards are from the Sword and Shield Pokémon games where Pokémon could Dynamax, and the VMax shows the Pokémon’s Dynamax form. Similar to the Pokémon game, the VMax cards have a number of new abilities and an exceptional amount of health, making them a useful card for in-game use and rare card players will want to add to their collection.
