Aljamain Sterling overtakes Petr Yan in a narrow gap

In what is sure to be a very different fight from last year, Aljamain Sterling scores a narrow decision over Petr Yan at UFC 273 to remain the undisputed UFC Bantamweight Champion

After winning the UFC Bantamweight Championship following a disqualification at UFC 259 in March 2021, Alyamin Sterling said it wasn’t how he wanted to win it.

Now, after all the bad blood between him and Petr Yan, all the accusations of exaggerating the mid-fight injury and not wanting to defend himself, all the fan hatred, Sterling could prove that he was the undisputed UFC champion is at bantamweight.

Sterling defeated interim champion Yan in the co-main event of UFC 273.

In the first round, Yan was the more aggressive fighter while Sterling fought on the backfoot. Both men landed their fair share of strikes, but the round seemed more of either man eager to grope the other.

The second round, however, was a very different story. Sterling managed to trip Yan and get on his back. There he dominated, nearly locking a choke on more than one occasion and landing a significant ground-and-pound in a 10-8 round.

Yan fought off Sterling’s initial takedown attempts in the third, but Sterling hit him with his left hand that made him tremble. Sterling then defeated Yan again in the round after 90 seconds and again he landed on Yan’s back. Despite not making a submission, Sterling once again made easy work of the man he had won the title from with a DQ.

Yan came after Sterling in the fourth round and appeared to stun him a little before swinging out one of his legs to bring the fight to the ground. Sterling got up, but Yan got on his back and the two wrestled at the fence. Not long after the break, Sterling got back on Yan’s back and almost locked himself in an armbar, but Yan slipped and got into top guard.

About a minute into the last round, Sterling retrieved Yan again, but this time he couldn’t get Yan to the mat. Yan landed a jumping knee on Sterling before coming back briefly. Sterling attempted multiple takedowns in the final frame, but Yan stuffed them each time.
