Alexander Volkanovski says fight with Max Holloway is a legacy

Alexander Volkanovski says there’s more at stake than just the UFC featherweight title in his trilogy fight against Max Holloway at UFC 276

The focus, however, is the middleweight title fight between Israel Adesanya and Jared Cannonier ufc 276 there is just as much, if not more, hype surrounding the evening’s co-main event. Alexander Volkanovksi and Max Holloway meet again for the UFC Featherweight Championship.

Both men have, at one level or another, begun to carve out a legacy in the Octagon. Both have long winning streaks in the sport. Both hold victories over some big names in the sport. Both were (or currently are in Volkanovski’s case) world featherweight champions. Both have earned the respect and praise of the fans.

With the two previously sharing the Octagon and following similar paths in the pursuit of the featherweight greatest of all time, Holloway believes this trilogy encounter will go a long way in both men’s legacy.

The defending champion agreed.

“This is still 100 percent a legacy fight,” Volkanovski said at his UFC 276 media day scrum. “He showed that he is still number one. People say he’s gotten better. So this is definitely a legacy fight. That’s why we wanted this fight. If I felt like that wouldn’t put me in a better position, you wouldn’t take it. But it does. You all want to see it, right? Everyone wants to see the trilogy. So this is a legacy fight. People want to see it. I was open to it; I wanted it too. So if this gets me anywhere, let’s do it.”

Alexander Volkanovski recalls the previous two fights with Max Holloway going into the fight of the UFC 276 trilogy

The first fight between Volkanovski and Holloway was a one-sided affair, Volkanovski confuses and proves too much for Hollowayallowing a new featherweight champion to be crowned at UFC 245.

The second fight at UFC 251 was a completely different story. Holloway got off to a strong start, winning the first two rounds, but Volkanovski fought back hard to take the fight into a crucial fifth round.

There, two judges awarded Volkanovski the round and subsequently the fight, leading to much controversy and debate that is still ongoing.

Unfortunately, Volkanovski feels the controversial decision spoiled the back-and-forth battle between the two.

“People will miss the chess game,” Volkanovski said. “The adjustments he made between fights, the adjustments I made mid-fight, and all of those things were pretty incredible. It’s very impressive, but you know, sometimes that’s missed when you have close fights.”

Some might feel that this trilogy fight doesn’t hold up as much as others in the sport as Volkanovski has won both fights so far and the two don’t have heated confrontational vulgar confrontations.

And yet, according to Volkanovski, the fact that both are popular with fans has proven them to be best in class and both rank high in the UFC men’s pound-for-pound rankings (Volkanovski at No. 2, Holloway at No ). 6), shows that this trilogy will have its own place in the history books.

“I’m very respected. He’s very respected. And to see two guys face each other at the top especially for fans of the sport who absolutely love it and round it up. They know they have a chess game and a great fight ahead of them,” Volkanovski said. “I think it’s pretty incredible.

“I know obviously it’s different when I’m 2-0 and things like that. But I still feel like that enriches the story anyway. The fact that Max was stubborn and made sure no one took that spot and then got another chance. I think that adds to the story because you know he is [had] nice performances, all that stuff. So, I think that all adds to the story and people really enjoy that. I can’t wait to see what happens.”
