Alexa Grasso subdues Joanne Wood in the first round

Alexa Grasso defeated Joanne Wood by submission (naked backstroke), Round 1 – 3:58 at UFC Columbus on Saturday, March 26, 2022, live from Nationwide Arena in Columbus, OH.

“I’m so happy. I told you I wanted my first submission and I did. I told you, I’ve done this hundreds of hundreds of times… It’s been a long road for three. consecutive wins,” said Grasso, who welcomes whatever fight the UFC assigns her next.

The women touch the gloves to initiate the action. Wood advanced but Grasso was able to combine and defeat Wood. From the top down, Grasso had many attacks. In the end, Grasso let Wood turn around to get her leg. Wood catches a kick and lands multiple kicks and blows. The women continued to trade with Wood relying on her kicks and knees, while Grasso relied on her blows. Wood landed with a reverse elbow, but Grasso was able to overturn, knocking Wood down. Grasso was hooked to both of them and locked in a bare ankle collar behind, forcing Wood to rush out.

Wood entered the fight as seventh in the UFC women’s seventh place fight. Two places ahead of Grasso ranked ninth. Wood joined the Octagon on a two-game losing streak after losing to Talia Santos and Lauren Murphy. Grasso entered Saturday’s game with three wins in her previous four games. In his final bout, Grasso defeated Maycee Barber at UFC 258.
