Alejandro Davidovich Fokina was outstanding this week in Monte Carlo. He started the season on a bad note, bowing out of the first rounds at the Australian Open, Open Sud de France, Rotterdam Open, Qatar Open and Dubai Tennis Championships. He started his clay-court season in Morocco, where he lost in the opening round. In Monte Carlo, he defeated Marcos Giron in the first round before defeating world No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the second round.

He then reinforced his win with a comfortable win over David Goffin and then defeated Miami Open Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, he edged out Grigor Dimitrov in straight sets 6-4,6-7(2),6-3, earning his place in his first Masters final.

Stefanos Tsitsipas started the season very positively. He made it to the semi-finals of the Australian Open, followed by a second-place finish in Rotterdam. He then reached the quarterfinals of the Open 13 Provence and reached the semifinals of the Mexican Open. He then had a very ordinary golden swing but came back this week in Monte Carlo.

He shot past Fabio Fognini and Laslo Djere in the early rounds before battling past Diego Schwartzman in straight sets in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, he outplayed second-seeded Alexander Zverev in straight sets 6-4, 6-2.
