Alabama men’s basketball player Great Keith requests to be inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame

Birmingham, Ala. – Former Alabama Men’s Basketball Featured Player, Keith Askins has been selected by the Board of Governors of the Alabama State Athletic Hall of Fame as an initiator for the 2022 Division. Askins, along with the Alabama head coach. Patrick Murphy, are two of eight nominees for this year’s hall of fame.

Alabama career (1987-90)

  • Was a letter writer for four years with Crimson Tide
  • Helped Alabama lead to three SEC Tournament championships and two appearances in 16 Sweet
  • Leading the team in terms of three-point goals scored (51) and efforts (140) in the 1989-90 season
  • Still in Alabama’s all-time top 10 for career 3-point goal percentage (7th) and games played (10NS)

NBA (1990-99)

  • Played all nine seasons of his NBA career with Miami, signing with the Heat in 1990 as an untrained free agent
  • Considered a reserve and defense specialist
  • Won the Heat’s lead award in the back-to-back season (1994-95, 1995-96) and was the team’s captain for four consecutive seasons (1995-99)
  • Retired in 1999 with 1,852 points and 1,428 rebounds
  • Still ranked on Miami’s list of all-time leaders for games played (5th), counterattacks (13th), three points taken (15th) and efforts (15th), total rebounds (15th), steals (17th), saves (17th), defensive rebounds (19th) and minutes played (19th)NS)
  • After retiring, he went on to become an assistant coach and scout with the NBA team
  • While on the payroll, the Heat won three NBA championships (2006, 2012 and 2013).
  • Currently the director of the College and Professional Scout for Heat

Hall Of Fame Class

  • Askins and the 2022 Hall of Fame will be inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame on May 7, 2022
  • 54NS The annual Banquet and Introductory Ceremony will be held at the Birmingham Ballroom at the Sheraton Birmingham
  • Since first class recognition in 1969, the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame has recognized 385 athletes including this year’s category.
