The Longhorns have not returned since Texas lost to Alabama in the 2009 national championship.

That may force the issue into the ongoing narrative, but they won’t be officially back this time around until they win the Big 12 and reach the college football playoffs in the current four-team format. Once the playoff model changes, we need to recalibrate what it really means to be back.
