Ukrainian aerial artist Oleg was one of the early standouts, performing an incredible act of power and grace that also included him shirtless and dripping wet in a bath.
Alesha Dixon described the performance as “hot” and “graceful,” adding that presenter Ricki-Lee needed “a rest” after the sexy performance.
But it was a comment by Kate Ritchie that really got the room temperature rising.
“Well that was just absolutely amazing,” she began innocently enough.
“Ricki started talking about the water and the bath and I was just worried that Alesha and I would get wet here in the front row.”
Suddenly there was a loud giggle from the audience, followed by Alesha giving her a stunned look and David Walliams jumping out of his chair in astonishment as the crowd’s laughter grew louder.
When Ritchie realized why everyone was laughing, she slapped her hand over her mouth in embarrassment and then hid her face behind a piece of paper.
“Ah, can you elaborate on that, Kate?” Ricki-Lee joked offstage while Oleg looked embarrassed.
“Disgusting!” Walliams grinned.
“Potty mouth!”
“Kate Ritchie, the nation’s sweetheart!” Alesha Dixon joked.
“I am shocked!”
A blushing Ritchie tried to regain her composure and said, “I’m so sorry!”
“Okay, um, that was absolutely amazing,” she continued, glancing shyly away from the stage where Oleg was standing.
“Um… what a wonderful performance, so much power… we want to see you in the finals again!”
But Ritchie wasn’t the only one who seemed ecstatic after Oleg’s performance.
“Um, do you have a second song, Oleg?” David Walliams gushed.
“I could just watch that again; It’s really fantastic what you do.”
He then added, “Obviously you’re a prime piece of human flesh,” causing the audience (and thankfully Oleg) to roar with laughter.
“That’s out of the question.
“What you do is very graceful, very memorable, you are one of a kind.
“I’ve never seen a number like this… and when I take a bath tonight I’ll be thinking of you.”
Jokes aside, Oleg had an impressive story to tell before his performance.
The family of the Spain-based Ukrainian acrobat found themselves in the middle of a horror story when Russian troops invaded his homeland.
Oleg said he begged his mother to flee Ukraine, but she didn’t want to go.
Eventually she and Oleg’s sister escaped and now live with him in Spain, but other family members are still in Ukraine.
Oleg revealed that 10 days after his mother fled Ukraine, the place where she worked was bombed.
He said his performance should show physical strength but also symbolize the mental toughness of Ukrainians fighting and living through the war.
“Everything about that performance – you’re so strong,” said Shane Jacobson in admiration.
“And I hope that people from your country, from Ukraine, see you now and can see you as a poster of strength.
“Because I think you are, my friend, I think you’re great.”
So amazing that he makes it to the Grand Final alongside Perth comedian Emo Mojak and all-female NSW acrobatic group Acromazing.
