Naomi Osaka is one of the biggest names in women’s tennis right now. She was the favorite in every tournament she competed in up until the 2021 Australian Open, but things haven’t been easy for Osaka since last year’s French Open. The Japanese, who generally struggles on clay, has decided that she will not hold any press conferences at Roland Garros. And after much backlash, she withdrew from the tournament citing mental health issues.

The incident damaged Naomi so mentally that she had to take a long break from tennis. Her game was also affected as she slipped out of the top 80 of the WTA rankings. The Japanese superstar has consistently made her mental health her priority, even stressing the importance of a “peaceful mind.”

Following her first-round win over Astra Sharma, Naomi opened up about her mental health in the press conference, revealing that she has finally started seeing a therapist after her loss at Indian Wells. She said her sister Mari was worried about her and suggested a therapist could help.

“I don’t know if I’m allowed to say this, but after Indian Wells I finally started talking to a therapist. It only lasted about a year after the French Open. Yeah, I don’t know, she kind of told me strategies and stuff. I know how helpful that is.” She said.

Naomi defeated Astra Sharma in straight sets 6-3 6-4 in the first round. She looked very promising in the match, dropping just 3 points on serve in the first set. She now meets 13th seed Angelique Kerber in the second round on Thursday in a blockbuster duel between two multiple Grand Slam champions.

If Naomi wins, she will face either Leylah Fernandez or Karolina Muchova in the third round. But if Naomi loses, she is expected to fall to 96th in the WTA rankings.
