AFLW: The Carlton Blues fend off the Essendon Bombers in the thrilling final moments of round two of the must-see thriller

Carlton delayed Essendon’s resurgence to victory by a point last term as their fierce rivalry spread to the AFLW.

19 points down at their last substitution, the Bombers scored their only three goals of the last term before the Blues held on and won 5-2 (32) to 4-7 (31) in Port Melbourne on Sunday.

In the first AFLW match between the two clubs, Blues star Darcy Vescio proved the difference with her hat-trick.

A goal from Prespakis last season brought Essendon within three points of their old club and she joined Carlton’s Mimi Hill on 21 possessions while Gee had 10 disposals.

But Prespakis was left with a vestigial error at the end of the first term.

The problem was that the quarter-hour siren had sounded and Prespakis was not allowed to take the shot.

Indeed, Essendon looked like a first-year club for their first three terms as the Blues took control and built their lead with each change.

But while Essendon conceded two goals in the third quarter, they began to equalize clearances and contested possessions.

That set the stage for a riveting final term in which the Bombers had the first 13 possessions and scored three goals in the opening minutes to put pressure on Carlton.

The Blues then kept their nerve as three-time All-Australian Peterson switched from her surprise role on the wing to her usual defensive post last season.
