AFL Trade News: Hawthorn free agent Jack Gunston moves to third club

Hawthorn forward Jack Gunston will continue his career at a third AFL club after officially telling the club he will be joining Brisbane.

Gunston, who turns 31 next month, will leave after 211 games and three Premierships with the Hawks. He originally started his career with Adelaide in 2010.

On Tuesday, Gunston said a lifestyle change was the motivating factor behind his move north as he weighed his options.

“It’s that lifestyle change that’s appealing and we’ll see what we end up getting,” he said.

While Gunston will depart as a free agent, the Hawks are unlikely to receive any compensation Karl Amons imminent arrival from Port Adelaide.

Free agent compensation is determined each year based on net free agent ins and outs at clubs.

It also means the Lions are unlikely to miss out on compensation for losing Collingwood up front Dan McStay.

That’s problematic as Brisbane still have to satisfy the Western Bulldogs in a trade Josh Darkley and have enough draft capital left over to match bids for a highly rated father-son pair Will Ashcroft and Jaspa Fletcher.

The Lions’ first pick is currently 15th, but they’ll likely need to get creative with future picks or even trade an established player to bring in more high-end draft picks.

Hawthorn boss of football Rob McCartney said the club wished Gunston well as he begins the next phase of his career.

“We’ve always had open discussions with Jack and his management about his current position here at the club and what his future could be,” McCartney said.

“Today, after much thought, Jack informed us that he would be exercising his right as a free agent to explore the market and we fully respect that.

“Jack has been an incredible servant during his 11 seasons here at Hawthorn. He leaves the club a three-time Premiership player and best and fairest winner, but more importantly, as a person genuinely respected and loved by his team-mates, staff and our Hawthorn fans.

“The Gunston family will always be a part of the Hawthorn fabric and we thank them for their contribution to Brown and Gold.”
