AFL Trade News: Geelong snags GWS gun Tanner Bruhn as Giants stock picks to pinch North’s No.1

AFL Premier Geelong has achieved one of his key trade goals, striking a deal with GWS for talented midfielder Tanner Bruhn.

The 20-year-old will join the Cats in exchange for an 18 pick in this year’s draft.

Pick 12 by the Giants in 2020, Bruhn played 30 games over two seasons, including 17 this year.

GWS is now armed with five top 20 draft picks — currently Nos. 3, 12, 15, 18 and 19 — and also traded Tim Taranto (Richmond) and Bobby Hill (Collingwood).

They’re also likely to acquire more picks from the Tigers to send midfielder Jacob Hopper to Punt Road.

Currently, the Giants hold five picks in the top 20 (3, 12, 15, 18, 19) and they have entered talks with North Melbourne for the No. 1 pick.

The Roos have said they’re ready to split their first pick if the right deal comes through, and the Giants are planning a massive move, according to football journalist Damian Barrett.

Pick #1 in this year’s draft will likely be Will Ashcroft but he is tied to Brisbane as a father-son selection. So without a clear, standout second pick, the Roos might prefer picking two highly-rated players instead of one.

Meanwhile, Geelong is hoping to strike a deal with Gold Coast for Jack Bowes and pick seven, factoring the player’s hefty salary into the process. The fine print of this deal should be finalized soon. The Cats are also negotiating with Collingwood over Ollie Henry and are now expected to offer Collingwood pick No. 25 for him after completing a massive pick swap with Brisbane.

The Cats traded picks 38, 48 and 55 and future second- and fourth-round picks next year for pick 25 to the Lions in hopes it should meet the Magpies’ demands for the contractless forward.

Geelong list manager Andrew Mackie said securing Bruhn’s signature was exciting news.

“Tanner is a very talented player who will add to our midfield squad while also having the versatility to play in other positions,” he said.

“Tanner had a number of options available and we have been impressed with the way he has handled during that time and we look forward to seeing him with the tires in 2023.

“We thank Jason McCartney and the Giants for the respectful and positive conversations between our clubs.”

Bruhn said he is looking forward to joining Geelong.

“I’m excited to join the Cats and return to Geelong and continue the next chapter of my career.

“I want to thank the Giants, players, staff and supporters for my time at the club. I’ve really enjoyed my two years and I wish everyone at the Giants every success.”
