AFL draft: Epic chants erupt at a local Melbourne pub for new AFL draftee George Wardlaw from North Melbourne

This is the AFL draft, not the FIFA World Cup.

You’d be forgiven if you were at a local pub in Melbourne with George Wardlaw’s pals on Monday night.

Drafted by North Melbourne with selection No. 4 on Monday night, the St Kevin’s College product joined Vic Metro teammate Harry Scheezel, who the Roos picked at selection No. 3.

One of the top talents in the country and a certainty of being selected in the top 10, Wardlaw couldn’t be with all of his buddies at the moment as he was at Marvel Stadium for the draft and his sweater was being presented onstage.

However, his friends made sure he partied in style without him as chaotic scenes erupted at a Melbourne pub when his name was read out.

What looks like almost – or even more than – 100 ecstatic friends of Wardlaw exploded in cheers before an epic chant erupted.

“Wardlaw! Wardlaw! Wardlaw!” they all shouted at once.

Wardlaw was an early contender for the No. 1, along with father-son Brisbane and eventual No. 2 Will Ashcroft, before a hamstring injury sidelined most of his season.

The burly midfielder pinched a hamstring on a training run for St Kevin’s and then made it worse just as he was due to start again.

He eventually returned with his school for the final game of the APS season but lasted just five minutes before injuring himself again.

But despite missing all national championships and most seasons in the NAB League and APS, the big game specialist was still a hot property for AFL clubs by the end of the draft.

Vision of Wardlaw’s pals’ reaction to his big moment wasn’t the only one of its kind.

West Australian product and lifelong West Coast Eagles fan Elijah Hewett was over the moon when his name was read by the Eagles on pick #14.

His family, described as “crazy Eagles fans,” erupted when their own team called up their son and brother.

“I’m just super excited and so excited to be with my family,” he told Fox Footy.

“I’m so excited to start there with Reuben (Ginbey) (the Eagles’ first draft pick).

“I’m really lucky. I am so happy.”
