Adele calls Las Vegas residency annulment ‘brutal’

Adele shared that she felt like “a shell of a person for a few months” after abruptly canceling her Weekends With Adele residency in Las Vegas in January – just days before it was due to begin.

In an interview with Desert Island Discs on BBC Radio 4, the singer says she felt guilty for disappointing fans who paid thousands of dollars to attend.

“I just had to wait and just grieve, I guess, just mourn the shows and get over the guilt, but it was brutal,” Adele shared.

Adele first broke the news of the cancellations in tears in a video posted to her Instagram, telling fans the dates would be rescheduled with additional information.

She told BBC presenter Lauren Laverne that she felt she had to deal privately with the backlash from the canceled event, admitting “the show wasn’t good enough. Maybe my silence was deadly, I don’t know. But it was awful.”

Despite feeling bad for fans, Adele said she has no regrets about the overall decision to end the residency, although “I definitely felt everyone’s disappointment and I was devastated and I was scared of letting them down . I thought I could pull it together and make it work, but I couldn’t. I stand by that decision… I’m not going to do a show just because I have to, or because people will be let down, or because we’re going to lose a lot of money.”

Adele told Laverne: “Of course I could be someone on TikTok or Instagram Live any day and say ‘I’m working on it’. I’m working on that of course! I won’t update you if I don’t have anything to update you on because that will only lead to more disappointment.”

However, Adele addressed the prospect of rearranging her US schedule during her concert in Hyde Park on Friday night, saying new dates were coming “very, very soon”.

“I had my shows that I was supposed to do, but they didn’t happen,” she said Friday. “Just waiting for a device.”

Performing at London’s BST Hyde Park Festival was Adele’s first public appearance in five years. The two-hour set included songs from their latest album, 30, as well as hits like “Rumour Has It” and “Rolling In the Deep.”
