Academy taps Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner as producers for the 95th Oscars

Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner will serve as executive producers of the 95th Academy Awards, which will take place in March 2023. Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences CEO Bill Kramer announced the producing duo, both from White Cherry Entertainment, on Saturday morning.

In addition to producing, Weiss will serve as director of the ceremony for the eighth consecutive year. The 2023 Oscars will be Weiss’ second production and Kirshner’s first Academy Awards production. The two were tapped by the Academy as part of a “focus on expertise in producing live TV events.”

“We are thrilled to have Glenn and Ricky at the helm,” Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang said in a joint statement. “We look forward to working closely with them, our Board of Governors and the Board’s Awards Committee to deliver an exciting and energetic show.”

“Bill made us an offer we couldn’t refuse,” Weiss and Kirshner said in a joint statement, borrowing a line from The Godfather about mafia intimidation tactics before breaking into a warm one with a “Jerry Maguire” quote changed tone. “But he really had us ‘at hello’.”

During Saturday’s academy meeting, Kramer also addressed member feedback, opening his remarks by noting that “the show needs to be reinvigorated.” To counteract this, the organization outlined plans to create a dedicated team within the academy solely focused on the awards ceremony, enriching the pre-show red carpet event status and addressing how best to honor craft winners. The academy faced setbacks this year when it decided to announce the results of certain below-the-line categories before the televised ceremony and to broadcast recorded and abridged acceptance speeches during the broadcast.

Notably, Kramer and Yang also mentioned plans to “explore expansions of the show in streaming,” which would mark new territory for the awards show. The Academy Awards has remained a televised-only event for the past several years, even as consumer streaming volume has increased.

With both Weiss and Kirshner named as executive producers, there’s a chance the Academy will recruit another high-profile personality to serve as the ceremony’s producer. The executive producers’ “expertise in the production of live television events” would provide the background needed if the Academy decides to appoint additional producers such as Will Packer in 2022 and Steven Soderbergh, Stacey Sher and Jesse Collins in 2021.

Along with Weiss and Kirshner, the Academy also announced a team of creatives who will help the couple shape the Oscars. David Chamberlin will serve as executive producer for the show’s red carpet, while Met Gala veterans Lisa Love and Raúl Àvila will serve as red carpet creative consultants. Additionally, Kenny Gravillis will serve as creative director, while Misty Buckley and Alana Billingsley have been tapped as production designers for the ceremony.

“We couldn’t be more excited to have live events veterans Glenn and Ricky executive produce the 95th Oscar show on ABC,” said Rob Mills, executive vice president of unscripted and alternative entertainment at Walt Disney Television, in an explanation. “Her experience and creativity are unmatched, and we look forward to seeing her vision for Hollywood’s biggest night.”

Weiss is a veteran of directing live television events, having won two Primetime Emmys for his work at the Academy Awards and three Primetime Emmys as director and nine as producer on 21 Tony Awards shows. Other awards include the Democratic National Convention, Kennedy Center Honors, Primetime Emmy Awards, American Music Awards, BET Awards, New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, and the Academy of Country Music Awards.

In his three-decade career, Kirshner received 26 Emmy nominations and won nine Emmy Awards, a Peabody Award and an Edward R. Murrow Award. His credits include Tony Awards, 14 Super Bowl Halftime Shows, Night of Too Many Stars, Primetime Emmy Awards, Democratic National Convention and Presidential Inaugurals.

The 95th Academy Awards will be held on March 12th at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood. The ceremony will be broadcast live on ABC. Academy taps Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner as producers for the 95th Oscars
