Aaron Rodgers shows elite leadership after criticizing young receivers

After quarterback Aaron Rodgers criticized the performance of the Green Bay Packers’ young receivers, he spoke at length with them at a team briefing.

There will be a plethora of young wide receivers on the Green Bay Packers offense in 2022, due in part to the departures of Davante Adams and Marquez Valdes-Scantling this offseason. While a few names shone in training camp, quarterback Aaron Rodgers was criticized the young wideouts last Tuesday for a variety of reasons including consistency, drops and routes.

After Rodgers’ comments went viral, ESPN’s Rob Demovsky wrote that the quarterback spoke “at length” with the young receivers during a meeting called Wednesday morning.

Aaron Rodgers speaks to young Packers receivers a day after his criticism

“Aaron spoke to us about what he likes and doesn’t like, just based on concepts or what he sees,” said Romeo Doubs, h/t Demovsky.

“He just wants us to see what he sees. So that way we can react faster, play faster and just dominate and stay who we are.”

The meeting was not called by Rodgers, according to Demovsky. Also present at the meeting were all of the quarterbacks, the coaches involved in the passing game, and Randall Cobb and Lazard. The two experienced wide receivers also spoke.

Doubs is one of three receivers selected by the Packers in last year’s NFL draft. He shone early on in training camp and received praise from Rodgers. Yet in Tuesday’s aforementioned practice against the New Orleans Saints, he had a drop on what Rodgers called it “The best throw of the day.”

Other new faces to the roster include Christian Watson, second-round pick from North Dakota State, and Samori Toure from Nebraska, who is seventh. They’ll sit alongside experienced passers on the depth chart in Cobb and Lazard, in addition to Sammy Watkins, who was signed as a free agent.

The Packers have Super Bowl ambitions, although Adams is no longer Rodgers’ primary target in the passing game. They certainly have a chance as their defense has improved this offseason and the NFC offers a much easier route to Super Bowl 57 than the AFC. But Rodgers lets the young receivers know that mistakes will not be tolerated even in training camp.
