Aaron Pico def. Adli Edwards via TKO (Strikes), Round 1 – 0:55 at Bellator 277 on Friday April 15, 2022 live from the SAP Center in San Jose, CA.
“So many guys turned down the fight, especially five days, weeks in advance. Nobody wants to fight me. I hope Bellator takes care of this guy, gives him four or five fights… I have the utmost respect for him. He’s as tough as they come,” Pico followed the fight.
Pico defeated Edwards in the first 30 seconds of the fight. From above, Pico landed with a pair of heavy elbows. Edwards got back to his feet. Pico came forward and landed a massive right hand, resulting in his second takedown. Edwards gave up his back and Pico eventually switched to side control. Edwards got back up, only to be taken down by Pico after landing a power shot to the body. Pico ruled down several elbows before letting Edwards up. Pico landed a head kick. Pico continued to land vicious shots to the body, resulting in another takedown. Pico went into the round first after dominating the entire round.
Pico came out of his corner and landed a three punch combo. Edwards showed a lot of heart, but he was no match for Pico, who headbutted Edwards off balance. Pico landed another hook to the body, scoring his fifth takedown. Edwards was able to get back up, but Pico kept attacking. Pico injured Edwards with a body shot, followed by a combo and another takedown. From above, Pico landed some heavy elbows before going sideways but lost his submission attempt. Edwards got back up but ate more left hooks on the body. After another body left hook and a three punch combo, Pico landed another takedown. For two rounds the fight was completely one-sided.
Edwards continued to show heart as he continued to get involved. The end came early in the third round. Pico landed a big right hand, which he followed with a left hand on his body. Edwards collapsed on the screen. Pico landed a few more shots before referee Mike Beltran stopped the fight.
Pico was originally scheduled to fight Jeremy Kennedy. However, Kennedy was forced to withdraw from the fight. Edwards agreed to intervene at short notice to fight Pico. However, the fight was moved from featherweight to catchweight.
Pico entered Bellator 277 as the fourth-ranked featherweight in Bellator. Having started his career 4-3, Pico has excelled since switching camps. Pico entered the fight on a five-fight win streak. After his sixth straight win, Pico is getting closer to a featherweight title fight.
Edwards last fought 13 days ago, delivering to Josh Harvey in the first round. After receiving Bellator’s call, it took Edwards only minutes to accept the fight. While Edwards showed a lot of heart, he was completely overwhelmed.
