It was, of course, “Aliens.” Director Ridley Scott’s epic 1979 sci-fi masterpiece catapulted Sigourney Weaver into the chronicle of film history (and popular culture). Weaver stars as Ellen Ripley in the classic tale of a spaceflight crew who accidentally picks up a terrifying creature, then commits a sinister murder. It ends badly for everyone on board except – surprise – Ripley. Against all odds, Ripley manages to defeat the big bad monster and lives to fight another day, becoming one of the first empowered action heroines in the process. this and helped redefine the entire genre.
At the time, Weaver was a fresh face and an unnamed relative. But that didn’t last. She reprized the role in director James Cameron’s equally brilliant 1986 sequel, “Aliens,” for which she received the first of three Academy Award nominations and went on to play. Ripley’s role in the other two films in the series is still very popular, it seems that there are always new incarnations in the works. There’s no denying the impact of the original “Alien” movie. It currently has a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and is considered by many to be one of the best sci-fi movies ever made – with Sigourney Weaver being the (human) face of the series.
That’s right, “Aliens” changed Weaver’s career trajectory. Would she be in the breakout movie “Avatar” (and its 73 sequels) if it weren’t for working with Cameron on “Aliens”? If she wasn’t a sci-fi icon, would she have been cast for “Galaxy Quest”?
Things changed for Sigourney Weaver after “Alien.” Lucky for us.
