The 1993 classic A League of Their Own, starring Tom Hanks, Geena Davis and Madonna, gets a modern update in a new series coming to Amazon Prime Video this Friday.
The remake of the series features all new characters in a similar storyline centered around the creation of an all-girls baseball league during World War II. Like the Penny Marshall-directed film, the series is set in 1943. New character Carson (played by Abbi Jacobson from “Broad City”) becomes fascinated with baseball after her husband is deployed abroad. While Carson’s character appears to be slightly inspired by Davis’ portrayal of Dottie in the original film, who has her teammate Greta, played by D’Arcy Carden Notes on Madonna’s glamorous Mae.
The biggest departure from the original film is a greater emphasis on race relations. Chanté Adams plays a black athlete named Max, who gets kicked out of the Test matches because of her race and takes a factory job hoping to play for the men’s team.
“Max’s storyline brings an explosion of downright painful drama to the world of ‘League,’ and that’s welcome,” he writes diversity‘s chief TV critic Daniel D’Addario in his review of the series. “The refusal to allow this series to play with nostalgia without embracing who was left out in a bygone era brings a not uncomfortably harshness to a series that other critics do in a calmer, lighter way.”
All eight episodes of A League of Their Own arrive on Prime Video on Friday 12th August. To stream the series, you must subscribe to Amazon Prime for $14.99/month or sign up for a 30-day tree trial here.
