A dog on an apartment windowsill sparks panic on Bourke Street

A dachshund perched high on the windowsill of a Sydney apartment block has caused onlookers to panic over fears it might fall off.

The assembled crowd down Bourke Street in Surry Hills acted quickly to get the dog to safety.

A passerby, who didn’t have time to stop and help, snapped a photo of the pooch sitting precariously on the ledge and posted it to Reddit, where Sydneysiders and dog lovers were desperate for news.

“This dog seems perfectly aware that he’s made some bad decisions,” one person said.

“He’s very lucky not to have fallen. Poor little bastard must be scared as hell. I hope this ends well,” said another.

“You can’t leave us hanging, please let us know if the stupid sausage got back in safely?” And if not, please lie and say it was,” said another.

While netizens waited for an update, those on the ground managed to get in touch with layers of the building, which gave them the dog’s apartment number, which was buzzing from the street.

“Obviously not the first time,” one of the locals who helped finally informed Reddit users.

She wasn’t wrong, the daring dachshund proved his experience of life on the brink with his next move.

“I dialed (the apartment number) on the intercom and the dog heard the buzz,” they said.

“Then (it) went back the way it must have slipped out.

“Puppy is fine.”

The pet owner wasn’t home at the time, the local boy said, but added that shifts confirmed they would “pass the message on to the owners.”

The terse call left many netizens confused. “You’d think they had an instinctive fear of heights. But maybe some don’t?” one wrote.

“Hopefully the owner can seal it so that doesn’t happen again.”

“How the hell did he get there? said another.

But others familiar with the breed were a little less surprised by the dog on the ledge.

“My sausage (dog) can get in and out of anything that isn’t sealed. It’s crazy,” said one person.

“Sausage dogs, for all their physical disabilities, are absolute escape artists,” said another.
