6 Patriots takeaways from preliminary press conference – The Athletic

Matt Groh began working for the Patriots more than a decade ago, joining the team in 2011 as an assistant scout. But on Friday he met the media for the first time in his current role as vice-president of player personnel.

The Patriots promoted Groh to the job in February after Dave Ziegler left for Vegas to co-manage the Raiders with coach Josh McDaniels. Groh first became a National Scout in 2019 before becoming the director of college scouting in 2021 and getting that job a year later.

Groh is now Bill Belichick’s chief human resources officer, but as he pointed out Friday, “Coach is the general manager. The coach is in charge.”

Still, it’s a position Groh called “an honor” after years of working under Nick Caserio and then Ziegler. And he spoke enthusiastically about what it was like to work with Belichick.

“I absolutely love it,” Groh said. “With all the input he’s asking of us and just his ideas and the information he has about these players through his various connections across the country at various schools. It was fantastic. Given the people I work with and the people who have sat in this chair before me, I definitely feel it is a great honor.”

With this role comes the responsibility of conducting the preliminary draft press conference on behalf of the team. On Friday, Groh spent almost half an hour answering questions and providing an insight into the off-season in New England. Here are a few takeaways from what he had to say.
