Opening Day is just over a week away, but the Yankees roster is still undecided. These five players are still fighting for their Major League lives.
The Yankees don’t have a lot of major roster decisions to make before Opening Day, but there’s still some uncertainty lurking at the edge of the roster of the major leagues. The few days remaining in Spring Training still mean a lot to some players trying to make sure they break camp and head north to the Bronx.
Ignoring decisions like this would be a big mistake for Yankees fans. A compressed early-season schedule will put more pressure on the benches and raise prices than usual. The additional roster slots allowed by MLB will help alleviate that pressure somewhat, but it still makes picking the right players at the bottom of the roster more important than usual.
New York will have plenty of time to make in-season moves to adjust their roster as the season draws to a close, but Opening Day lineups are still important. Here are 5 players who are still working hard to start the new year in major tournaments.
5. Albert Abreu
It may surprise some Yankees fans to learn that Abreu is now 26 years old. In other words, it’s time for him to turn his potential into a product in the industry.
The fact that he doesn’t have minor league picks will work in his favor in terms of making the Opening Day roster. That, combined with Aaron Boone needing an extra arm at the start of the season should give him a chance to show that he deserves to stay at the big league club for the foreseeable future. Abreu is a good choice to start his campaign in the Bronx but he needs to pitch well if he wants to avoid being assigned an assignment instead of a superior pick at the end of the year.
